About Public Housing
The Public Housing program provides decent, safe, and affordable rental housing for eligible low-income families, the elderly, and persons with disabilities. The Huntsville Housing Authority manages several public housing communities throughout the city, offering quality homes at affordable rents.
Rent is based on approximately 30% of your adjusted monthly income, making housing affordable regardless of your income level. Utilities may be included or paid separately depending on the property.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for Public Housing, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Annual gross income at or below 80% of the Area Median Income (AMI)
- Qualify as a family, elderly (62 or older), or disabled individual
- U.S. citizenship or eligible immigration status
- Pass criminal background screening
- Provide required documentation for verification
How to Apply
Applications for Public Housing can be submitted at our main office or through our online application portal. The application process includes:
- Completing the application form
- Providing proof of income for all household members
- Submitting identification documents
- Background check authorization
- Interview with housing staff
After your application is processed, you will be placed on the waiting list based on your application date and any applicable preferences.
